Description

Product Description: Co-Trimoxazole Solution is a combination antibiotic medication composed of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. Co-Trimoxazole is particularly effective against susceptible strains of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as some protozoa.

Indications and Usage: Co-Trimoxazole Solution is indicated for the treatment of the following bacterial infections when caused by susceptible organisms:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Acute otitis media
  • Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP)
  • Traveler's diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli

Dosage and Administration: The dosage and administration of Co-Trimoxazole Solution should be determined by a healthcare professional based on the severity of the infection, the patient's age and weight, renal function, and the susceptibility of the causative bacteria. It is typically administered orally in divided doses.

Dosage Forms and Strengths: Co-Trimoxazole Solution is available as an oral suspension containing sulfamethoxazole 200 mg and trimethoprim 40 mg per 5 mL.

Contraindications: Co-Trimoxazole Solution is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, trimethoprim, or any component of the formulation. It should not be used in patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency, or during pregnancy (particularly during the first trimester).

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Co-Trimoxazole may cause severe allergic reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Discontinue the medication if a severe reaction occurs.
  • Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function, hepatic impairment, or folate deficiency.
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi and resistant bacteria.

Adverse Reactions/Side Effects: Common adverse reactions associated with Co-Trimoxazole Solution include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and hypersensitivity reactions. Less commonly, it may cause hematologic disorders, hepatic dysfunction, and renal impairment.

Drug Interactions: Co-Trimoxazole may interact with several medications, including anticoagulants, diuretics, phenytoin, methotrexate, and sulfonylureas. Monitor patients closely for potential drug interactions.

Use In Specific Populations Description: Safety and efficacy of Co-Trimoxazole Solution in pediatric patients, pregnant women, and nursing mothers have not been established. Use with caution in these populations, and weigh the potential risks and benefits before administering.

Clinical Pharmacology: The antibacterial action of Co-Trimoxazole is due to the sequential blockade of two consecutive steps in the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins in susceptible microorganisms.

Nonclinical Toxicology: Animal studies have shown that Co-Trimoxazole may cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant animals. However, the relevance of these findings to humans is unknown.

Clinical Studies: Clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Co-Trimoxazole Solution in the treatment of various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and traveler's diarrhea.
